Ujjain Simhastha 2028: Dates, Ram Ghat, Mahakal and Camps
Everything for the Ujjain Simhastha 2028: dates, Ram Ghat and Mahakaleshwar, where the camps are, staying cool in a summer Kumbh, choosing a tent and how to book.

The Ujjain Simhastha — the Kumbh of Madhya Pradesh — is held every 12 years on the Kshipra river. Simhastha 2028 is planned from 27 March to 27 May 2028, about 62 days, with three Shahi Snans led by the akharas and several more parva snan days. The Simhastha Mela authority fixes the final snan dates; check them before you book travel.
Ram Ghat and the Kshipra
Ram Ghat is Ujjain's oldest and most important bathing ghat, where the Shahi Snan processions end. Other ghats along the Kshipra — Datt Akhara ghat, Narsingh ghat, Mangalnath — take the overflow on the big days.

Mahakaleshwar and the temples
Ujjain is home to Shri Mahakaleshwar, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, famous for its Bhasma Aarti. Harsiddhi, Kal Bhairav and Mangalnath temples are all near the ghats. Expect long darshan queues through the Simhastha; book Bhasma Aarti passes early through the temple's official channels.
Where to stay for the Simhastha
Camps in the Mela area
Camps are set up in the Simhastha Mela area along the Kshipra. A camp keeps you close to Ram Ghat on snan days, when vehicles are stopped far out.

Our Simhastha track record: Yoga Kumbh 2016
At the last Ujjain Simhastha in 2016 our team ran Yoga Kumbh — a tent campus with daily yoga on the lawns, havan, satsang, talks by visiting teachers and cultural evenings. The 2028 camp brings back morning yoga and evening satsang.

Hotels in Ujjain and Indore
Ujjain's hotels fill first. Indore, about 55 km away, has many more hotels and the nearest airport.
Staying cool in a summer Kumbh
April and May in Ujjain are hot, with afternoons often above 40°C. That changes what a good camp looks like:
- Cooling: ask whether tents have coolers or fans, and whether the dining area is shaded.
- An attached bathroom with running water, so you can bathe and wash clothes without queuing in the heat.
- Drinking water available round the clock, and ORS in your bag.
- A routine: snan and darshan at dawn, rest in the afternoon, temples and aarti again in the evening.
Light cotton clothes, a cap, sunglasses and sunscreen matter more here than woollens. Our packing checklist has a section for summer Kumbhs.
Getting to Ujjain
Ujjain Junction has trains from Delhi, Mumbai and most of central India. The nearest airport is Indore, about 55 km away by road. During the Simhastha, roads near Ram Ghat close to vehicles on the main snan days, so plan to walk from your stay.
Temples beyond Mahakal
Ujjain is one of the seven sacred cities. Close to the ghats are Harsiddhi (one of the Shakti Peeths), Kal Bhairav, Chintaman Ganesh and Mangalnath, believed to be the birthplace of Mars. Sandipani Ashram, where Krishna is said to have studied, is a short drive away.
Where the Simhastha camps are
The Mela area spreads along the Kshipra around Ram Ghat, Datta Akhara and Narsingh Ghat, with the akharas' camps and the pilgrim tent cities beyond. A camp in or near the Mela area lets you walk to the river for the early-morning snan, when it is coolest and before the akhara processions. On the main Shahi Snan days, roads into the old city close to vehicles, so check the walking distance from the camp before you book.
Choosing a tent
Our Ujjain camp offers Deluxe, Luxury and Royal tents, all with attached bathrooms. In summer the Royal tent is the most comfortable for families — it is larger and stands on a raised wooden deck with its own shaded sit-out. Compare them in our tent types guide.
When to book
The Ujjain Simhastha is two months long, so dates spread out more than in Haridwar or Nashik — but the Shahi Snan days still fill early. Ask the desk as soon as you know your dates. Read our Ujjain Simhastha 2028 dates guide, or see every option on the Ujjain Simhastha page.
