Hotels in Yamunotri — Hotel Booking and other information

There are no hotels at Yamunotri temple itself. The shrine stands at about 3,290 m at the end of a 6 km walk, and the beds for it are below: at Janki Chatti, where the road ends and the walk begins, across the river in Kharsali (Kharsli), a few kilometres down at Hanuman Chatti and Syana Chatti, and about two hours down the valley in Barkot, where most pilgrims sleep. Choosing among the hotels in Yamunotri is really choosing which of those places to wake up in.

Pulp Hotels lists two verified 3 star hotels for Yamunotri, both in Barkot: Hotel Aashiyana on the Yamunotri road and Amandeep Galaxy on the Gangotri road. Pulp has no hotel at Janki Chatti, Kharsali or Hanuman Chatti, and this page says what to expect there.

Hotels in Janki Chatti

Expect a clean, plain room in a small building on the slope above the road, often shared by a family or a group of four or five. Some have attached bathrooms with a geyser; many bring hot water in a bucket on request. Food comes from the lodge kitchen or the dhabas along the road: simple vegetarian thalis, dal, rice and tea. Power cuts happen, mobile signal is patchy, and nights are cold in every month of the season. On the busiest days of May and June the beds go by mid-afternoon, and parking fills by mid-morning. A night here is worth it if you want the temple early, before the path fills with ponies and palkis, or plan to walk up and down in one day without four hours of driving added to it.

Hotels in Kharsali

Kharsali sits across the Yamuna from Janki Chatti, reached on foot over the bridge, and is where the goddess is carried down to spend the winter. It has village homestays and a few guesthouses rather than hotels, quieter than the roadside and with the old Someshwar temple at its centre. Rooms are simple and few, so confirm before you walk over with luggage, and keep in mind that the car stays on the Janki Chatti side.

Hotels in Hanuman Chatti and Syana Chatti

Hanuman Chatti stands where the Hanuman Ganga meets the Yamuna, a few kilometres below Janki Chatti, and has more lodges than the road head; it is the realistic choice when you arrive late without a booking. Syana Chatti, further down, has riverside guesthouses and breaks the drive from Barkot. Both mean a short drive up in the morning before the walk.

Why most families sleep in Barkot

For a group with parents or children the trade usually favours Barkot: a heated room, a proper dinner, a car park outside, and a town with chemists and ATMs. The cost is an early alarm, since you leave around first light to reach Janki Chatti before the parking fills. Both of Pulp's Yamunotri hotels are there, and our Barkot guide compares its areas.

The Yamunotri walk and the season

The path from Janki Chatti is about 6 km each way, steep in places, and takes most people three to five hours up; ponies and palkis are available at fixed local rates. At the temple, pilgrims cook rice in the hot water of Surya Kund as prasad. The temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya in late April or May and closes around Diwali, when the villages above Barkot close too. Yatra registration is required and is checked on the way. Our Yamunotri trek guide covers the walk step by step.

Before you book

  • Ask whether the room has an attached bathroom and a geyser, or hot water by bucket.
  • Ask where your car will park, and arrive before mid-morning in the season.
  • Confirm a small lodge's booking by phone or WhatsApp the day before: they overbook in peak weeks.
  • Carry your yatra registration slip and ID.
