Hotels in Uttarkashi — Hotel Booking and other information

Uttarkashi is the district town on the Bhagirathi and the main overnight halt on the road to Gangotri. It sits at about 1,150 m, its name means the Kashi of the north, and its Kashi Vishwanath temple makes it a place of pilgrimage in its own right. It is also a working town with hospitals, banks, fuel, a market and a bus stand, which is why yatra groups stop here to rest and restock before the last stretch up the valley. Choosing between the hotels in Uttarkashi comes down to three things: how close you want to be to the temple and market, whether you need easy parking, and whether a room facing the river matters to you.

Pulp Hotels lists Shiv Parivar Resort at Bhareti Chungi on the New Bypass Road, a 3-star stay with Ganga and mountain views and a temple in its grounds, with real photos and room details on its page.

Where to stay in Uttarkashi, area by area

AreaWhere it isSuits
Kashi Vishwanath temple and the main marketThe old centre, near the bus standPilgrims without a car; the temple, food and shops on foot
New Bypass RoadThe road that takes through traffic around the centreSelf-drive and group vehicles, parking and a quieter night; Shiv Parivar Resort is here
Along the BhagirathiRiverside stretches through and around townRiver-facing rooms, the reason many people stop here at all
Gyansu, Tiloth and JoshiyaraResidential areas at the edges of town, on both banks of the riverHomestays and smaller hotels, a short drive from the centre
Maneri and the Gangotri roadUpstream, towards Gangnani and HarsilA head start on the drive to Gangotri, with fewer services

If you are travelling with elders or a large group, the bypass road is usually easiest: the centre's lanes are narrow and parking near the temple is scarce in the season.

3 star hotels in Uttarkashi

Shiv Parivar Resort, Pulp's stay in Uttarkashi, is a 3 star hotel on the New Bypass Road, with parking for self-drive and group vehicles, hot water and a restaurant. For most Gangotri pilgrims that is the right night here: Uttarkashi is the last town with full services, and a 3 star room with a car park outside makes the early start up the valley easier. Homestays across the river in Joshiyara and Gyansu suit longer, slower stays.

Uttarkashi on the Gangotri route

Gangotri is about 100 km further up the Bhagirathi, past Maneri, Gangnani and Harsil, on a road that narrows and climbs. Most itineraries sleep in Uttarkashi, drive up for darshan and come back the same day, or move on to Harsil for a quieter night closer to the shrine. Coming from Yamunotri, the night before is usually Barkot, a drive over Radi Top. Our Yamunotri and Gangotri route guide sets out the order, and the Gangotri to Gaumukh trek guide covers the walk to the glacier.

When to stay in Uttarkashi

Gangotri opens on Akshaya Tritiya, in April or May, and closes around Diwali; in winter the goddess is worshipped at Mukhba, near Harsil. May and June are the busiest weeks, and rooms fill on weekends. July and August are the monsoon, when landslides can close the Bhagirathi valley road. September and October are clear and calm. Unlike the shrine towns, Uttarkashi stays open all year, and in January its Magh Mela fills the town. Winters are cold, so ask about heating from October on.

Getting to Uttarkashi

The road from Rishikesh runs through Chamba and Chinyalisaur to Dharasu and up the Bhagirathi; from Dehradun you can come over Mussoorie or round through Rishikesh. The nearest railway stations are Rishikesh and Dehradun, and the nearest airport is Jolly Grant at Dehradun. Allow a full day on hill roads and avoid driving after dark. Char Dham registration on the Uttarakhand tourism portal is mandatory, and the Gangotri road has checks during the season.

What to know before you stay

  • Last full town. Uttarkashi has the last hospitals, pharmacies, dependable ATMs and fuel on the way up. Draw cash and fill the tank here, as Harsil and Gangotri have very little.
  • Food. Vegetarian meals are easy to find, and many yatra hotels cook only vegetarian food. Order dinner early, as the town's restaurants close early.
  • Network. Mobile signal is good in town and patchy beyond Maneri.
  • River rooms. If a view of the Bhagirathi is why you are booking, confirm that your room faces it.
  • Group rooms. Triple and four-bed rooms are common here, as that is how most yatra parties travel.

Things to do in and around Uttarkashi

  • Kashi Vishwanath temple — the Shiva temple at the heart of the town, with the Shakti temple and its great trident opposite.
  • Nehru Institute of Mountaineering — India's well-known climbing school is based here, with a museum on Himalayan expeditions.
  • Gangnani hot springs — a common stop on the drive up to Harsil and Gangotri.
  • Dayara Bugyal and Dodital — the valley's best-known meadow and lake treks, both starting near Uttarkashi, for a spare day or two.

Book your stay in Uttarkashi

Pick your Gangotri day first, then the area: the bypass for a car and a quiet night, the centre for the temple on foot. Every stay in Uttarkashi on Pulp Hotels shows its rooms and cancellation terms before you pay, and the team is on WhatsApp if the road changes your plans. For the shrine itself see where to stay at Gangotri, and for the start and end of the trip, Dehradun and Rishikesh. The longer write-up on where to stay in Uttarkashi has more on the town.

Uttarkashi hotel FAQs

How far is Gangotri from Uttarkashi?

About 100 km up the Bhagirathi valley. The road climbs and narrows, so allow most of a day for the round trip with darshan.

Should I stay in Uttarkashi or Harsil for Gangotri?

Uttarkashi has more rooms, hospitals and services; Harsil is closer to Gangotri, higher and much quieter. Large groups usually pick Uttarkashi.

Which area of Uttarkashi is best for a car?

The New Bypass Road, which avoids the narrow lanes of the centre and has easier parking.

Are hotels in Uttarkashi open in winter?

Yes. Uttarkashi is a year-round town, though Gangotri and the upper valley close for the winter. Ask about heating before you book.

Can I visit Kashi Vishwanath temple from a bypass hotel?

Yes, it is a short drive into the centre. Leave the car where the hotel suggests, as parking by the temple is tight in the season.

Where should I stay for the Dodital trek?

Gangori, at the start of the Dodital road, or Uttarkashi itself the night before. Leave the car where the hotel suggests.

Are there 3 star hotels in Uttarkashi?

Yes. Shiv Parivar Resort on the New Bypass Road is a 3 star stay with parking.
