Inside a Kumbh Mela Tent in Winter: Warmth, Bathrooms, Sleep and Safety
What it is really like inside a Kumbh Mela tent in Haridwar's January–February cold — how warm it gets, bathrooms, power, noise at night and safety — and how to pick a tent that keeps you comfortable.

The Haridwar Kumbh 2027 runs from 14 January to 20 April — right through north India's winter. The question pilgrims ask most about Kumbh Mela tents is simple: will we be comfortable? Here is what it is really like inside a Kumbh tent in the cold months, what makes the difference, and what to ask before you book.

How cold does it get?
January and February nights in Haridwar fall to around 5°C, and mornings by the river feel colder with the breeze and the damp. March is milder, and April — the last Amrit Snan on 14 April — is warm by day. So for the January–February snans, warmth inside the tent matters more than anything else.
What keeps a tent warm
- A framed Swiss cottage tent with thick walls and a door that closes properly — far warmer than a pole tent.
- A raised floor, so you are not sleeping on cold, damp ground.
- Real beds with mattresses and quilts, and extra blankets on request.
- A heater where the camp provides one — ask before you book.
Pack thermals, woollen caps and socks for everyone anyway; you will be outdoors at the ghat before sunrise.
Bathrooms and hot water
A shared toilet block at 5°C, a short walk away in the dark, is the hardest part of a basic tent stay — especially for elders and children. Book a tent with an attached bathroom and hot water. Every tent in our camps has one; the Royal tent has a wood-panelled bathroom with a walk-in shower.
Power, light and charging
Good Kumbh camps run lights and charging points in each tent, with backup for the evenings. Carry a power bank anyway — on snan days you will use your phone for maps, meeting your group and UPI payments, and networks slow down in the crowds.
Sleep and noise
The mela never fully sleeps: bhajans, kirtan and announcements carry at night, and the camp wakes early for the snan. If you sleep lightly, pack earplugs, and consider a camp in a quieter zone — Neel Dhara, across the Ganga from Har Ki Pauri, is calmer at night than the heart of Bairagi Camp.
Safety and your belongings
- Choose a camp with 24-hour security and lit paths.
- Keep valuables in a locked bag or the camp's locker; take little to the ghat.
- Give every child and elder a card with the camp's name and phone number.
- Note the nearest police and medical posts when you arrive.
Which tent for the cold months?
For a couple, a Luxury tent with its four-poster bed is cosy and warm. For a family, the Royal tent gives everyone room, its own sit-out on a raised deck, and the best bathroom. The Deluxe tent is the value choice and still has its own bathroom and hot water. Compare them in Deluxe vs Luxury vs Royal, and see what to pack for a camp stay.
