Hotels in Kedarnath — Hotel Booking and other information

Kedarnath sits at roughly 3,580 m in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, and the temple is reached on foot. There is very little accommodation at the shrine itself, so almost everyone travelling for the Kedarnath Yatra sleeps somewhere along the approach and walks up from there. Choosing the right base matters more here than choosing the right hotel.

The approach works like this. Private vehicles are stopped at Sonprayag. From Sonprayag a shared jeep covers the last few kilometres to Gaurikund, and Gaurikund is where the trek begins — roughly 16 km on foot to the temple. Pilgrims who want an early start stay at Gaurikund. Those who want a quieter night and a shorter drive the previous day stay further back at Guptkashi, Phata or Sitapur.

Pulp Hotels currently lists one verified property on this stretch: Behl Ashram, on the Kedarnath trekking way near Gauri Mata Temple in Gaurikund. It is a pilgrim stay rather than a resort, and it is positioned for the walk.

Where to stay for the Kedarnath Yatra

Gaurikund

The trailhead. Staying here means you can be walking before first light without a road transfer, which matters because the trek takes most people between six and nine hours each way. Rooms are simple and the season is short. This is where Behl Ashram is. See stays near Gaurikund.

Sonprayag

The last point private vehicles reach. Useful if you arrive late and do not want to negotiate the Gaurikund shuttle at night, though the town is small and rooms fill quickly through the season. See stays near Sonprayag, or read the Sonprayag guide for how the transfer works.

Guptkashi and Phata

About an hour to ninety minutes back down the valley, with more rooms, more restaurants and a lower altitude to sleep at — which some travellers find helps. The helipads for Kedarnath are in this stretch. See hotels in Guptkashi.

Sitapur

A short distance below Sonprayag and a common overnight for groups who want to be close to the vehicle point without staying in Sonprayag itself. See stays near Sitapur.

Budget stays and ashrams for the Kedarnath Yatra

Most rooms on this route are simple, and that suits a pilgrim who will be asleep early and gone before dawn. Ashrams and dharamshalas at Gaurikund and Sonprayag offer shared rooms for families and groups; hotels further down at Sitapur, Phata and Guptkashi add attached bathrooms, parking and a restaurant. Pulp's stay here, Behl Ashram, is a budget ashram on the trekking way itself.

Behl Ashram, Gaurikund

The property is on the trekking route near Gauri Mata Temple. It runs three room categories sized around how pilgrim groups actually travel — couples, families and larger parties sharing one room.

Listed facilities include attached bathrooms, hot and cold water, clean drinking water, meals, room service, housekeeping, CCTV, a travel desk and doctor on call. Current rates and availability are shown on the listing above — they move with the season, so book against the live price rather than a figure quoted in an article.

Getting to Kedarnath

Most travellers come through Haridwar or Rishikesh, then drive via Rudraprayag and Guptkashi to Sonprayag. The drive from Haridwar is long — plan on a full day, and longer in rain. Helicopter services operate from the Phata and Sersi helipads during the season and are booked separately from your room.

Registration for the Char Dham Yatra is mandatory and is done on the Uttarakhand government tourism portal before you travel. Carry a printed or saved copy along with photo ID.

When to go

The temple opens around Akshaya Tritiya in late April or early May and closes around Bhai Dooj in October or November. Everything on this route is seasonal — hotels in Gaurikund shut when the temple does. May, June, September and October are the busiest months. July and August bring heavy monsoon rain, landslides and road closures on the Garhwal routes; many travellers avoid them, and those who do go should build spare days into the plan.

What to check before booking

  • Which base town the property is actually in — "Kedarnath" in a listing often means somewhere on the approach road, not the shrine.
  • Room occupancy against your group size, since group rooms here are the norm.
  • Hot water and heating. Nights are cold at this altitude even in June.
  • Whether meals are included or ordered separately.
  • Cancellation terms, given how often weather closes this route.
  • Parking, if you are driving your own vehicle to Sonprayag.

Nearby stays on the Kedarnath route

If Gaurikund is full or you would rather sleep lower, look at Guptkashi. Travellers combining Kedarnath with Badrinath usually continue through Joshimath and Badrinath.

Frequently asked questions

Are there hotels at Kedarnath temple itself?

Very few, and they are basic and heavily booked. Nearly all visitors stay at Gaurikund, Sonprayag, Sitapur, Guptkashi or Phata and trek up.

Where does the Kedarnath trek start?

Gaurikund. Private vehicles stop at Sonprayag and a shared jeep covers the last stretch to Gaurikund.

How long is the trek?

Roughly 16 km each way. Most people take six to nine hours going up, depending on fitness and weather. Ponies and palanquins are available.

Which property does Pulp Hotels list here?

Behl Ashram in Gaurikund, with two-bed, four-bed and five-bed rooms. Current rates are on the listing above.

Can I stay overnight at Kedarnath?

Yes, in the government tents and cottages or the ashram rooms near the temple. They are basic and fill early, and sleeping at 3,580 m is hard for some, so many pilgrims come back down to Gaurikund the same day.

Where should I stay for Triyuginarayan?

Sonprayag or Sitapur. The temple is up a side road from Sonprayag, so it fits into the day before or after the Kedarnath trek.

Should I book ahead?

Yes. The season is short, the route has limited rooms, and May, June, September and October fill early.

How do I book a hotel in Kedarnath?

Choose a stay on this page and book it online, or send your dates to the Pulp Hotels desk on WhatsApp or +91 86790 08600 and we will suggest rooms along the route. Rooms at the temple itself are few and go first, so most pilgrims book Gaurikund, Sonprayag, Sitapur or Guptkashi.

What is the hotel room price in Kedarnath?

It depends on the date, how close the stay is to the trek start and the size of the room. Each stay on this page shows its live rate, or "rates on request" where the owner quotes for your dates, and rates rise in the busy weeks after the temple opens.

Until when is Kedarnath open?

The temple closes each year on Bhai Dooj, two days after Diwali, in October or November, and reopens in late April or May; each year's dates are announced in advance (see our Char Dham opening and closing dates). Stays near the temple close with it; Guptkashi and Sitapur stay open longer.

Why is Kedarnath closed for six months?

Snow. The shrine is at about 3,580 m and is snowbound in winter, so the doli of Kedarnath is carried down to the Omkareshwar temple in Ukhimath, where worship continues until the doors reopen.
