Hotels in Harsil — Hotel Booking and other information

Harsil is a small village on the Bhagirathi at about 2,620 m, roughly 25 km short of Gangotri. It is an army and orchard village more than a tourist town — deodar forest, apple trees, a river running cold and fast through the middle of it — and it is the quietest place to sleep on the Gangotri route.

People stay here for two different reasons. Pilgrims use it as the last stop before Gangotri, which cuts the morning drive to under an hour. Everyone else comes because it is one of the few high Garhwal valleys where you can simply stop and stay put for a couple of days.

Pulp Hotels lists Harsil Village Resort, near PNB Bank, with luxury rooms, premium cottages and a heritage room.

3 star resort in Harsil

Harsil Village Resort is a 3 star resort: cottages and rooms among the orchards, heating, hot water and a restaurant, which matters in a village with almost nowhere else to eat. For a pilgrim it turns the Gangotri day into an easy one; for anyone else it is a reason to stay a second night.

What Harsil is like

Small. There is no market to speak of and few independent restaurants, so meals generally come from where you are staying — worth confirming before you arrive. Mobile coverage is patchy. The compensation is the setting: the Bhagirathi, the deodar, the orchards, and Mount Sudarshan at the head of the valley.

Day walks from the village lead to Bagori, the Bhagirathi bank, and further up the valley. Gangotri is close enough to visit and return the same day, which is the main practical reason to base yourself here.

Getting to Harsil

Drive up the Bhagirathi valley from Uttarkashi through Bhatwari and Gangnani. Uttarkashi is the last town with full services, so refuel and draw cash there. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant at Dehradun and the nearest railhead is Dehradun or Rishikesh. Harsil is close to a sensitive border area, so carry photo ID.

When to go

May, June, September and October are the best months — clear weather, and the shrine is open. The apple harvest falls in late summer and early autumn. July and August bring heavy monsoon rain and landslide risk on the valley road. Winter is cold with snow, the shrine is shut, and access can close entirely, so confirm the road is open before you set out.

Around Harsil

Bagori, just across the river, is a Bhotiya village with old wooden houses and is an easy walk from Harsil. Mukhba, a little further on, is the winter seat of the Ganga deity — when Gangotri closes for the season, the goddess is brought down here. Beyond that the valley continues towards Gangotri through high, thinly populated country close to the border, so carry ID and check locally before wandering far.

The valley has seen serious flood damage in recent years and some stretches of road and village have been rebuilt or rerouted. Confirm current conditions with your property before you set out rather than relying on an older itinerary.

Staying more than one night

Harsil is one of the few places on the Char Dham circuit that repays slowing down. If your schedule allows two nights, use the first for Gangotri and the second for the valley itself — the orchards, the river, the walk to Bagori. Because meals generally come from your property, a longer stay is worth discussing at booking so the kitchen is expecting you.

What to check before booking

  • Whether meals are included — options in the village are limited.
  • Room heating, which you will want in almost any month.
  • Power backup, since supply here is intermittent.
  • Road conditions at the time you travel, particularly outside the main season.
  • Room occupancy for families, since the rooms here sleep four and five.
  • Cancellation terms, given how often this road closes.

The larger halt below is Uttarkashi, which has hospitals, fuel and more rooms. Travellers arriving from Yamunotri stay at Barkot the night before.
