Hotels in Gangotri — Hotel Booking and other information
Gangotri is the shrine of the goddess Ganga, at about 3,100 m on the Bhagirathi in Uttarkashi district, and the last stop on the road before the river's source at the Gaumukh glacier. The temple stands where the road ends, and most visitors come for darshan, a dip at the ghat and, for some, the trek on to Gaumukh. Finding hotels in Gangotri is the hard part: the settlement at the temple is small, seasonal and simple, so most travellers choose between a basic night at the shrine and a better room lower down the valley.
Pulp Hotels does not list a hotel in Gangotri itself. The nearest stays we list are Harsil Village Resort in Harsil, about 25 km below the temple, and Shiv Parivar Resort in Uttarkashi, the main town on the route.
Where to stay for Gangotri
| Base | Distance to the temple | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Gangotri, at the temple | On foot | Dharamshalas, ashrams, a government rest house and simple lodges; basic rooms, open only in the season |
| Harsil | About 25 km, under an hour | Proper rooms and resorts in a quiet orchard village; the best compromise for an early darshan |
| Uttarkashi | About 100 km, four to five hours | The widest choice of hotels, with banks, fuel and hospitals; most itineraries sleep here before and after |
A night at Gangotri itself puts you at the temple for the morning aarti and the start of the Gaumukh trek, but expect simple rooms, limited hot water and cold nights even in June. Harsil, lower and greener, has the comfortable rooms closest to the shrine — see hotels in Harsil. Uttarkashi suits groups who want a full town behind them — see hotels in Uttarkashi.
Getting to Gangotri
The road climbs from Uttarkashi along the Bhagirathi through Bhatwari, Gangnani with its hot springs, Sukhi Top, Harsil and Bhaironghati to the temple, about 100 km in all. It is a narrow mountain road: allow four to five hours, more in rain or yatra traffic, and avoid driving after dark. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant at Dehradun and the nearest railheads are Dehradun and Rishikesh. Coming from Yamunotri, the route runs from Barkot to Uttarkashi first. Char Dham registration on the Uttarakhand tourism portal is mandatory before you travel.
When Gangotri is open
The temple opens around Akshaya Tritiya in late April or early May and closes around Diwali, when the goddess is carried down to Mukhba village near Harsil for the winter; the exact dates are announced each year. May, June, September and October are the busiest months. July and August bring monsoon rain and landslides on the Bhagirathi valley road, so build in spare days. Once the temple closes, the lodges at Gangotri shut too, while Harsil and Uttarkashi stay open.
At the temple
- Gangotri temple — the white granite shrine of the goddess Ganga, with the morning and evening aarti.
- Bhagirath Shila — the rock beside the temple where King Bhagirath is said to have meditated to bring the Ganga to earth.
- Surya Kund — the waterfall where the river drops into a gorge just below the temple.
- Pandava Gufa — a cave reached by a short walk along the river.
The Gaumukh trek
Gaumukh, the snout of the Gangotri glacier where the Bhagirathi emerges, is about 18 km on foot from the temple, with Bhojbasa as the usual overnight halt and Tapovan beyond for experienced trekkers. The trail runs through Gangotri National Park, entry needs a permit, and only a limited number are issued each day, so arrange it in advance. Most trekkers spend the night before at Gangotri to start at first light.

- Whether meals are served — there are few restaurants at the temple.
- Parking, if you are driving yourself.
- Cancellation terms, since the road can close without notice.
