Hotels in Govindghat — Hotel Booking and other information

Govindghat is where the road to Badrinath meets the trail to Hemkund Sahib and the Valley of Flowers. It sits on the Alaknanda in Chamoli district, about 22 km beyond Joshimath, at the point where the Lakshman Ganga comes down from the Bhyundar valley. Almost everyone who stops here is about to walk up to Ghangaria or has just walked down, so the hotels in Govindghat are built around one question: how easy is the morning start, and where does the car wait while you are up the mountain.

Pulp Hotels lists Hotel Badrish Govindghat, a verified 3 star hotel, with real photos and room details, and the team is on WhatsApp for arrival times and parking.

Where to stay for Hemkund Sahib and the Valley of Flowers

WhereWhat it isSuits
GovindghatThe bazaar, the gurudwara and the hotels on the Badrinath roadThe night before the trek and the night after it, with the car parked below
PulnaThe road head a few kilometres up the valley, where the walk now beginsOnly a drop-off point: shared jeeps run up from Govindghat
GhangariaThe village at the top of the trail, at about 3,050 mOne or two nights for the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib
JoshimathThe town below, with the most roomsA late arrival, or when Govindghat is full
PandukeshwarA few kilometres on towards BadrinathA quieter night, by the Yogdhyan Badri temple

The usual plan is a night in Govindghat, the walk up to Ghangaria the next day, one or two nights there, and a last night back in Govindghat before the drive on to Badrinath or down to Joshimath. Leaving the heavy luggage in the car or at the hotel makes the climb much lighter.

3 star hotels in Govindghat

Hotel Badrish Govindghat is a 3 star hotel with attached bathrooms, hot water and meals, which is what a tired trekker wants at either end of the trail. The large gurudwara at Govindghat also houses and feeds pilgrims, and many Hemkund yatris stay there; a hotel adds a private room, a geyser and a quieter night.

The trek from Govindghat to Ghangaria

Shared jeeps run from Govindghat to Pulna, and the trail climbs from there along the Lakshman Ganga to Ghangaria, roughly 10 km of steady uphill that takes most people five to seven hours. Mules, porters and palkis are available at the start for those who cannot walk it, and a helicopter shuttle runs between Govindghat and Ghangaria in the season, weather permitting. From Ghangaria, the Valley of Flowers is about 4 km in one direction and Hemkund Sahib about 6 km of steep climbing in the other, so give each its own day.

When to stay in Govindghat

The season follows the trails. Hemkund Sahib opens around late May or June and closes in October, on dates announced each year; the Valley of Flowers is open from around the start of June to the end of October, and is at its fullest in bloom in July and August. Those are also monsoon months, when landslides can close the Badrinath road for hours, so keep a spare day. June and the weeks around the opening are the busiest; September is quieter and clear.

Getting to Govindghat

Govindghat is on the Rishikesh–Badrinath road, about 270 km from Rishikesh through Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Joshimath, and most people break the drive with a night at Joshimath. The nearest railway stations are Rishikesh and Haridwar, and the nearest airport is Jolly Grant at Dehradun. Yatra registration on the Uttarakhand tourism portal covers Hemkund Sahib as well as the Char Dham, so register before you travel and carry the slip.

What to know before you stay

  • Parking. Ask where your car will wait for the two or three days you are up the mountain, and whether there is a charge.
  • Early breakfast. The first jeeps to Pulna leave early; check the kitchen can feed you before then.
  • Luggage. Most hotels will keep bags you do not need at Ghangaria.
  • Food. Govindghat is a pilgrim stop and its kitchens are vegetarian.
  • Cash and signal. Draw cash in Joshimath; mobile signal is patchy up the valley.
