Hotels in Barkot — Hotel Booking and other information
Barkot is the town where the Yamunotri yatra spends its night. It sits at about 1,220 m in the Yamuna valley in Uttarkashi district, low enough to sleep well and close enough to reach the Janki Chatti road head early, and for Char Dham trips that start from Dehradun or Mussoorie it is usually the first night in the hills. Most of the hotels in Barkot are built for exactly that: yatris who arrive in the evening, eat, sleep and leave before sunrise for the walk to Yamunotri, then come back down for a second night.
Pulp Hotels lists two verified hotels in Barkot, each with real photos and room details: Amandeep Galaxy near the Barkot tunnel on the Gangotri road, and Hotel Aashiyana on NH-94 at Rudi Ghati, on the Barkot–Yamunotri road.
Where to stay in Barkot, area by area
| Area | Where it is | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Barkot town and bus stand | The market around the bus stand | Arriving late by bus or shared taxi; food, shops and ATMs on foot |
| Yamunotri road (NH-94) | Leaving town towards Kuthnaur and Janki Chatti | A head start on the morning drive; Hotel Aashiyana is on this side |
| Gangotri road and the Barkot tunnel | The road east towards Radi Top and Uttarkashi | Yatris going on to Gangotri after Yamunotri; Amandeep Galaxy is here |
| Kuthnaur and Syana Chatti | Further up the valley on the Yamunotri road | Riverside guesthouses closer to the road head, with fewer services |
| Hanuman Chatti and Janki Chatti | The end of the road, where the walk begins | Sleeping at the trailhead for the earliest start; rooms are few and simple |
For most families and groups, Barkot itself is the right base: it has the most rooms, the most food and the easiest parking, and the drive to Janki Chatti is a morning's run up the valley. Stay higher only if you want to be walking at first light; hotels in Janki Chatti, Kharsali and Hanuman Chatti are compared on our Yamunotri page.

3 star hotels in Barkot
Both hotels Pulp lists in Barkot are 3 star: Hotel Aashiyana on the Yamunotri road and Amandeep Galaxy on the Gangotri road, each with attached bathrooms, hot water, family rooms and food on site. That is the level most Yamunotri pilgrims want, a warm room and an early breakfast; the riverside camps and resorts further up the valley add space and views, and homestays in the villages around Barkot suit a slower trip.

How the Yamunotri day works from Barkot
From your hotel in Barkot the road climbs the Yamuna valley through Kuthnaur, Syana Chatti and Hanuman Chatti, where the Hanuman Ganga meets the Yamuna, to Janki Chatti. From Janki Chatti the shrine is a walk of about 6 km on a paved path; ponies, palkis and porters are available at the start. Most pilgrims leave Barkot before dawn, finish darshan by afternoon and are back in Barkot the same evening, so book two nights rather than one. The Yamunotri trek guide covers the walk step by step.
When to stay in Barkot
Yamunotri opens on Akshaya Tritiya, in April or May, and closes on Bhai Dooj, in October or November; the deity then moves across the river to Kharsali for the winter. The first weeks after opening, May and June, are the busiest, and every hotel in Barkot fills on the weekends. July and August are the monsoon, when landslides can hold up the valley roads. September and October are quieter and clear. Barkot stays inhabited in winter, but many hotels cut back their service once the shrine closes.
Getting to Barkot
The usual road from Dehradun climbs over Mussoorie and down past Kempty Falls to Nainbagh, Damta and Naugaon before reaching Barkot. From Rishikesh and Uttarkashi the road comes in over Radi Top. The nearest railway station is Dehradun and the nearest airport is Jolly Grant, outside Dehradun. These are hill roads all the way, so allow far more time than the distance suggests and avoid driving after dark. Char Dham registration on the Uttarakhand tourism portal is mandatory before you set out.
What to know before you stay in Barkot
- Food. Hotel kitchens on the yatra route serve vegetarian meals. Order dinner when you arrive, as places close early.
- Cash and signal. Barkot has ATMs; above Syana Chatti the network is patchy and cash is what works for ponies and tea stalls.
- Family rooms. Most yatra groups travel four to a room. Confirm what an extra bed means, and ask for a lower floor for elders.
- Early breakfast. Ask whether the kitchen can pack breakfast for a pre-dawn start.
- Cancellation terms. Weather closes these roads at short notice.
Things to do around Barkot
- Yamunotri Temple, Surya Kund and Divya Shila — pilgrims cook rice in the hot spring as prasad and pray at the rock pillar before darshan.
- Kharsali — the Yamuna's winter home, across the river from Janki Chatti, with the old Someshwar temple.
- The Yamuna at Barkot — an evening by the river after the drive in.
- Radi Top — the pass on the road to Uttarkashi, with wide views over the forests.
