Hotels in Joshimath — Hotel Booking and other information

Joshimath, also known as Jyotirmath, is the last town of any size on the road to Badrinath and the place most travellers on this side of Garhwal spend at least one night. It sits at about 1,900 m in Chamoli district, roughly 45 km below the Badrinath temple, and it has what the villages higher up do not: a real choice of rooms, banks and ATMs, fuel, pharmacies and a market. A night here breaks the long drive from Rishikesh, lets elders get used to the height before Badrinath, and puts Auli, the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib within a day's reach.

Pulp Hotels lists two verified 3 star hotels in Joshimath, each with real photos and room details: Hotel Dhanesh and Hotel Divine Residency.

Hotels near Jyotirmath, the Kalpavriksha and the Auli road

The upper town is the old one: Jyotirmath, the math Adi Shankaracharya founded, the ancient mulberry tree called the Kalpavriksha beside it, where he is said to have meditated, and the Narsingh temple, the winter seat of Badrinath. Hotels near them suit pilgrims who want to walk to the temples. The Auli road climbs out of town to the ski slopes; ask whether the ropeway is running before you plan on it. Down the hill, the Badrinath road passes Vishnuprayag on its way to Govindghat, the start of the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib treks, and Ghangaria, the village at the top where trekkers sleep. See hotels in Govindghat for that side.

Why Joshimath is the base for Badrinath

Badrinath is about 45 km up the valley, usually an hour and a half to two hours by road. Many pilgrims sleep in Joshimath, drive up for darshan and come back the same day, because Joshimath has more rooms and a lower altitude that is easier to sleep at. The town is tied to the shrine itself: when Badrinath closes for the winter, worship continues at the Narsingh temple here, and Jyotirmath is one of the four maths founded by Adi Shankaracharya. See hotels in Badrinath if you would rather sleep by the temple.

Auli, the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib

  • Auli — the meadows and ski slopes above town, about 16 km by road, and by the ropeway when it is running. Snow comes in winter; summer brings green slopes and views of Nanda Devi. Our Auli travel guide covers the trip, and stays in Auli are listed too.
  • Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib — both treks start from Govindghat, about 22 km towards Badrinath, with Ghangaria as the overnight halt. Many trekkers sleep in Joshimath before and after. See the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund guide.
  • Vishnuprayag — the meeting of the Alaknanda and the Dhauliganga, just below town on the Badrinath road.
  • Tapovan and Bhavishya Badri — hot springs and a quiet temple out on the Niti valley road, an easy half-day.

When to stay in Joshimath

May and June are the busiest months, when the Badrinath yatra is in full swing and rooms fill fast. July to September is the monsoon: the Valley of Flowers is at its best, but landslides can hold up the road. October and November are clear and cool, the best months for views. From December to February it is cold, with snow at Auli; Joshimath stays open, though Badrinath is closed for the winter.

Getting to Joshimath

Joshimath is about 250 km by road from Rishikesh, a full day's drive through Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag and Chamoli. The nearest railway stations are Rishikesh and Haridwar, and the nearest airport is Jolly Grant at Dehradun. Buses and shared jeeps run up the valley, but a private taxi is far easier with luggage or elders. Landslides close these roads at times, so keep a spare half-day and avoid driving after dark.

What to know before you stay

  • Last services. Joshimath has the last dependable ATMs, pharmacies and fuel before Badrinath. Draw cash here.
  • Cold nights. From October to April, check for heating and hot water before you book.
  • Food. Hotel kitchens on the Badrinath road serve vegetarian meals; order dinner early.
  • Network. Signal is good in town and patchier on the way to Badrinath and Govindghat.
  • Room size. Family Rooms and Family Suites sleep more people, which suits yatra groups.
