Ramkund on the Godavari, Nashik

The Nashik–Trimbakeshwar Simhastha Kumbh is held once every 12 years on the Godavari, when Jupiter enters Leo (Simha). This time it opens with dhwajarohan (flag hoisting) at Trimbakeshwar and Ramkund on 31 October 2026 and runs to 24 July 2028.

Two bathing sites: Ramkund and Kushavarta

Unlike Haridwar, the Simhastha has two centres. In Nashik, pilgrims bathe at Ramkund in Panchavati, where Lord Rama is said to have bathed during his exile; the Vaishnav akharas bathe here. In Trimbakeshwar, about 30 km away, the Shaiva akharas bathe at the Kushavarta kund near the Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga, the source of the Godavari.

Where to stay for the Nashik Kumbh

Camps in Tapovan and Panchavati

Tapovan is where the sadhus' camps (Sadhugram) go up, close to Ramkund and Panchavati. A camp here keeps you inside the mela and within reach of the main ghat.

Hotels in Nashik city

Nashik has far more hotels than Trimbakeshwar. Book early for the Amrit Snan dates; roads near Ramkund close to vehicles on those days.

Trimbakeshwar

Stays in Trimbakeshwar are limited and fill first. Many pilgrims stay in Nashik and travel to Trimbakeshwar before dawn for the 12 September snan.

Weather

The Amrit Snans fall in the monsoon (August–September): carry rain gear and expect wet ghats.

Getting to Nashik

Nashik Road is the main railway station, with trains from Mumbai, Pune and across India. Nashik's airport at Ozar is about 20 km from the city. By road, Nashik is roughly 170 km from Mumbai and about 210 km from Pune. For the Amrit Snans, arrive a day or two early — roads into Panchavati are closed to vehicles on snan days.

Around Ramkund and Panchavati

Panchavati is the old heart of Nashik, tied to Lord Rama's exile. Besides Ramkund, pilgrims visit the Kalaram temple, Sita Gufa and the Godavari ghats downstream. Tapovan, a short way east, is where the sadhus' camps go up during the Simhastha.

Visiting Trimbakeshwar

Trimbakeshwar, about 30 km from Nashik, is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the source of the Godavari. On its Amrit Snan day (12 September 2027) leave Nashik well before dawn. Darshan queues at the temple are long through the Simhastha; go on a weekday if you can.

Where the Nashik Kumbh camps are

The camp area for the Simhastha grows up around Tapovan and Panchavati on the Godavari's banks — the Sadhugram where the sadhus and akharas stay. A camp here puts you close to Ramkund, the Kalaram temple, Sita Gufa and the Panchavati ghats. On Amrit Snan days the roads into Panchavati close to vehicles, so the walk from your tent to the river is what matters most. Ask any camp for its exact location pin before you pay.

Monsoon: what changes for a tent stay

Haridwar's Kumbh is a winter Kumbh; Nashik's is a monsoon one. August and September bring regular rain, so look for:

  • A raised floor or deck so water does not come into the tent.
  • An attached bathroom — a walk to a shared block in the rain is miserable.
  • Waterproof tent fabric and covered paths between the tents and the dining area.
  • Somewhere to dry clothes after the snan.

Pack an umbrella or a poncho, quick-dry clothes, slippers with grip and a dry bag for your phone. Our Kumbh camp packing checklist covers the rest.

Choosing a tent

Our Nashik camp has the same three tents as our Haridwar camps — Deluxe, Luxury with a four-poster king bed, and the larger Royal on a raised wooden deck — all with attached bathrooms and hot water. Families and anyone staying a week or more usually pick the Royal tent. Our guide to Deluxe vs Luxury vs Royal tents compares them with photos.

When to book

Book two to three months ahead for the Amrit Snan dates, earlier for groups. For more on the Nashik dates and the temples to visit, read our Nashik Simhastha 2027 guide, or see every option on the Nashik Kumbh Mela page.
