Yamunotri and Gangotri: Barkot, Uttarkashi and Harsil Explained

The western half of the Char Dham — Yamunotri and Gangotri — gets less attention than Kedarnath and Badrinath, and it is where the itinerary is most often planned badly. The two shrines are very different, and the base town you choose matters more here than anywhere else on the circuit.

Yamunotri: the one with a trek

Yamunotri sits at roughly 3,290 m and the last stretch is on foot — about 6 km up from Janki Chatti. It is shorter than Kedarnath but steep, and it is a morning job: start late and you finish the descent in fading light with tired legs.

Which makes the base town the whole decision. Barkot, at about 1,220 m, is roughly a couple of hours below Janki Chatti and low enough for a proper night's sleep. Staying there and leaving early is the standard play, and the one that works.

Gangotri: the easy one

Gangotri, at roughly 3,100 m, is motorable — you drive to the shrine. That makes it the gentlest of the four, and a good place to put a lighter day in the middle of a heavy itinerary.

There are two credible bases:

Uttarkashi

The main town on this side, roughly 100 km short of the shrine, with the most services and the widest choice of rooms in Uttarkashi. The practical, unromantic choice.

Harsil

About 25 km before Gangotri, at roughly 2,620 m, in a deodar valley on the Bhagirathi. It is smaller, colder, considerably more beautiful, and much closer to the shrine — which means an unhurried morning instead of a pre-dawn start. Harsil is the one people are still talking about after the yatra ends.

If your schedule allows only one night on this side, Harsil is the better night. If you need laundry, a pharmacy and a mechanic, it is Uttarkashi.

How the first four days usually run

• Day 1 — Rishikesh or Dehradun to Barkot, about 210 km and a full day.
• Day 2 — Barkot to Janki Chatti, trek to Yamunotri and back, night in Barkot.
• Day 3 — Barkot to Uttarkashi or Harsil, about 100 km onward.
• Day 4 — Gangotri and back, then onward towards the Kedarnath valley.

Two things people underestimate

First, the driving. Rishikesh to Barkot is a whole day, not a morning, and starting it after a night flight is how yatras begin badly. Second, the cold at Harsil. It is over 2,600 m and it does not care what month it is — pack for a cold night even in June.
