Kumbh Mela 2027 Camps for Families and Senior Citizens: A Practical Guide
Taking parents or children to the Kumbh? How to choose a family-friendly Kumbh Mela camp — bathrooms, warmth, food, walking distances and help on snan days.

Many pilgrims come to the Kumbh to bring their parents for the snan they have waited years for — and many bring children who will remember it for life. Kumbh Mela camps can be a wonderful way to do that, but a camp that suits a group of young friends can be hard on a 70-year-old. Here is how to choose Kumbh Mela camps for families and senior citizens, from people who run them.

The bathroom decides everything
For elders, an attached bathroom with a western toilet and hot water is not a luxury — it is the difference between a good stay and a difficult one. Night-time walks to a shared block in January cold, on uneven ground, are exactly what you want to avoid. Every tent in our camps, from Deluxe to Royal, has an attached bathroom with hot water.
Keep everyone warm
Haridwar's Kumbh runs through winter. Nights in January and February fall to around 5°C, and a tent loses heat faster than a building. Ask whether the camp provides a heater or extra blankets, and pack thermals, woollen caps and socks for everyone. In Ujjain's summer Simhastha the problem reverses — ask about coolers and shade.
Choose a camp close to the ghat
On snan days the roads around the ghats close to vehicles, often from the evening before. For a senior citizen, a walk of a few kilometres in a crowd is a real risk. Pick a camp whose walking distance to the ghat you know in advance, and plan to bathe early, before the akhara processions on Amrit Snan days. Our Haridwar camps at Neel Dhara and Bairagi Camp are within the mela area; the desk tells you the route before you book.
Pick the right tent size
A family of four is more comfortable in a Royal tent, our largest, raised on a wooden deck with its own sit-out — elders can rest outside without walking anywhere. Couples travelling with parents often book two adjoining Deluxe or Luxury tents instead, so everyone has their own bathroom. Ask the desk to keep your tents next to each other.
Food that suits everyone
Kumbh camps serve sattvic vegetarian meals, often without onion or garlic. If anyone in your family needs plain food, less spice, or meals at fixed times for medicines, tell the desk when you book. Carry dry snacks for children for the long snan mornings.
Health and safety checklist
- Carry every regular medicine for the whole trip, plus copies of prescriptions.
- Write your camp name, the desk number and your own phone number on a card in each elder's and child's pocket.
- Agree a meeting point at the ghat in case anyone is separated — crowds on Amrit Snan days are enormous.
- Keep a small torch; camp paths are lit, but ghats before dawn are dark.
- Avoid the busiest hour of an Amrit Snan with elders if you can; the day before or after is far calmer.
When a hotel is the better choice
If a family member uses a wheelchair or cannot manage steps and uneven ground, a hotel with a lift near Har Ki Pauri may suit better than any tent. We list hotel stays near Har Ki Pauri for exactly this reason. Many families split the trip: the snan days in a hotel close to the ghat, a few days in a camp for the experience.
Booking for a family
Tell the Pulp Hotels Kumbh desk how many adults, children and senior citizens are travelling, and your snan date. The desk suggests the camp and tents that fit, quotes your dates, and you pay at the camp. See every camp on our Kumbh Mela camps page.
Plan your stay: see every camp, hotel, ashram and homestay on our Kumbh Mela Haridwar stays page (and all Kumbh Mela camps), or WhatsApp the Pulp Hotels Kumbh desk on +91 93891 86101.
