Budget Stay in Kumbh Mela Haridwar: Ashrams, Homestays and Hotels

Rates in Haridwar climb sharply during the Kumbh, especially on the snan days. But a budget stay in Kumbh Mela Haridwar is still very possible if you plan. Here is how.

1. Pick your dates carefully

Prices peak around Makar Sankranti (14 Jan), Mauni Amavasya (6 Feb) and the Amrit Snan days (6 Mar, 8 Mar, 14 Apr 2027). The Kumbh lasts until 20 April — the weekdays between the big snan days are calmer and much cheaper, and the Ganga is just as holy.

2. Consider an ashram

Ashrams are the traditional budget stay for pilgrims: simple rooms, sattvic food and satsang, often near their own ghat. Expect fixed timings and house rules.

3. Try a homestay

Many Haridwar families open rooms during the Kumbh. A homestay usually costs less than a hotel of the same comfort, includes home-cooked food, and your host will know the road closures.

4. Budget hotels a little further out

Hotels a 15–25 minute walk from Har Ki Pauri — towards Bhupatwala, Jwalapur or Kankhal — are cheaper than those right on the ghats. Check the walking route, because vehicles stop well short of the river on snan days.

5. Book early, pay at the property

The cheapest rooms go first. Booking early locks in a rate; with Pulp Hotels' Kumbh listings you pay at the property, so you are not out of pocket months ahead.

Budget checklist

  • Attached bathroom and hot water — worth paying a little more for in winter.
  • Distance to the nearest ghat on foot.
  • Whether meals are included.
  • Cancellation terms.

Eating well on a budget

Haridwar is a vegetarian town with good, cheap food. Dhabas and sweet shops along Railway Road and near Har Ki Pauri serve puri-sabzi, kachori and lassi for very little, and many ashrams and akharas run bhandaras (free community meals) during the Kumbh. Drink sealed or filtered water only.

Getting around cheaply

Walking is often fastest near the ghats during the Kumbh. Shared e-rickshaws cover the main roads for a small fare; agree it before you sit down. Haridwar Junction has direct trains from Delhi and many other cities — book as early as the railway allows for the snan weeks, when every train fills.
