Hotels in Ujjain — Hotel Booking and other information
Ujjain is an old temple city on the Kshipra river in western Madhya Pradesh, about an hour by road from Indore. Its centre is the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, and most visitors come for darshan there, an evening at Ram Ghat and a round of the city's other shrines. Hotels range from simple rooms in the lanes by the temple to larger hotels on the roads towards Indore and Dewas.
Where to stay in Ujjain
For the temple, the streets around Mahakaleshwar and the Mahakal Lok corridor are the most convenient, especially if you hope to attend the pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti; rooms here are compact and fill early on festival days. Freeganj, near Ujjain Junction, is the city's market area, with the widest choice of mid-range hotels and restaurants and easy autos to the temple. Larger hotels with parking and lawns sit along the Indore and Dewas roads, a short drive out. Families on a longer trip sometimes stay in Indore and visit Ujjain for the day.
Temples and sights
Beyond Mahakaleshwar, visitors usually include Harsiddhi Mata near Ram Ghat, Kal Bhairav, Mangalnath on the riverbank, Sandipani Ashram and Chintaman Ganesh. The Ved Shala observatory recalls the city's role in Indian astronomy, and Omkareshwar, the state's other Jyotirlinga, is a long day trip away.
Best time to visit Ujjain
October to March is the comfortable season. April to June is very hot, and the monsoon brings heavy rain from July. Mahashivratri and the Shravan month draw large crowds to Mahakaleshwar, and the Simhastha Kumbh, held once in twelve years, comes to Ujjain from 27 March to 27 May 2028.
Getting to Ujjain
Ujjain Junction has direct trains from Delhi, Mumbai, Bhopal and Ahmedabad. The nearest airport is in Indore, roughly 55 km away, with flights from most large cities.
