Where to Stay in Haridwar: Har Ki Pauri and the Quieter Streets
Where to stay in Haridwar: close to Har Ki Pauri for the Ganga aarti, or a few streets back for quiet and parking — what each trade-off really means, and how to book.

Haridwar is organised around one place — Har Ki Pauri, where the Ganga aarti happens every evening — and how far you want to be from it is the whole decision. Close means atmosphere and a short walk to the aarti; close also means narrow lanes, no car access to the door, and noise until late.
The trade-off, street by street
Right by Har Ki Pauri
Walking distance to the ghat and the evening aarti, inside the old bazaar. Rooms here are mostly older and plainer, vehicles stop a lane or two away, and the area stays busy well into the night. Pilgrims who want to be at the ghat at dawn and again at dusk pay that price gladly. Our Haridwar listings include stays on both sides of this trade-off.
A few streets back — toward the station and Upper Road
Ten to twenty minutes' walk or a short auto from the ghat, and the difference is immediate: proper hotels, parking, quieter nights, more space. This is the sensible base for families and for anyone arriving by car, with the aarti still an easy evening trip.
Jwalapur and the bypass
Further out and cheaper, near the highway. Fine if you are passing through or need easy road access on to Rishikesh or the hills, less so if the ghat is the point of your visit.
Book around the crowds
Haridwar fills on every full-moon and festival, on Kanwar Yatra in the monsoon, and most of all during the Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh. On those dates rooms anywhere near the ghat vanish and prices climb; decide early and hold a room the week you fix your dates. On an ordinary weekend it is far easier.
Ashrams, dharamshalas and Kankhal
North of Har Ki Pauri, along the road to Rishikesh, Bhupatwala and the Saptrishi area are lined with ashrams and dharamshalas. Rooms are simple and often come with house rules — a gate that shuts at night, set meal times, no alcohol or non-vegetarian food — and many take bookings only by phone or in person. They suit pilgrims who want a quiet, devotional stay by the river and do not mind the rules.
South of the centre, Kankhal is the older, slower quarter around the Daksh Prajapati temple, with its own ghats and far less traffic. It is a good base for families with a car who want calm evenings and are happy to drive or take an auto to Har Ki Pauri for the aarti. Wherever you stay, the Har Ki Pauri aarti guide has the timings and where to stand.
Using Haridwar as a base
Most Char Dham and Rishikesh trips touch Haridwar — it is the railhead many pilgrims arrive at before heading up. If you are moving on the next morning, a room near the station saves the bazaar crawl. Rishikesh is only an hour on, and the route guide covers the drive beyond.

Before you go
- Rooms by Har Ki Pauri are older and car-free at the door; a few streets back gets you parking and quiet with the aarti still close.
- Book well ahead for full-moon days, Kanwar Yatra and especially Kumbh — ghat-side rooms sell out first.
- Staying near the station helps if you are moving on to Rishikesh or the Char Dham the next morning.
Good to know
- Har Ki Pauri hosts a Ganga aarti every evening, not only on festival days.
- Haridwar is one of the four cities that host the Kumbh Mela, along with Prayagraj, Nashik and Ujjain.
- It is one of the traditional gateways to the Char Dham, where many pilgrims arrive by rail before the drive up.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the best area to stay in Haridwar?
By Har Ki Pauri for the aarti and the ghat atmosphere, or a few streets back toward the station and Upper Road for proper hotels, parking and a quieter night with the aarti still an easy walk.
Are there hotels right next to Har Ki Pauri?
Yes, inside the old bazaar, but they are mostly older and plainer and cars stop a lane or two away. Many travellers prefer a hotel a short auto ride back and visit the ghat in the evening.
When does Haridwar get fully booked?
Full-moon days, festivals, the monsoon Kanwar Yatra and above all the Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh. Book as soon as your dates are fixed on those occasions; ordinary weekends are easy.
About the author
Pulp Hotels Team
The Pulp Hotels Team is the desk that runs Pulp Hotels and the verified properties on this route — Barkot, Uttarkashi, Harsil, Guptkashi, Joshimath, Badrinath and the Kedarnath valley. We deal with the owners of those hotels, and with the pilgrims staying in them, through every day of the season, and these guides are written and corrected from that work and from the official notices each season brings. Fares and opening dates change every year, so we leave them out on purpose and point you at the source instead.
