Stay near Har Ki Pauri, Haridwar: Areas, Hotels and Ashrams
Where to stay near Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar: each area by walking time to the ghat, hotels, ashrams and homestays, parking, the aarti, and the Kumbh 2027 snan days.

Har Ki Pauri is the ghat most people come to Haridwar for: the morning dip at Brahma Kund, where the footprint of Lord Vishnu is said to rest, and the Ganga aarti at sunset. To stay near Har Ki Pauri (also written Hari Ki Pauri) means you can walk down for the dip before the crowds, be on the steps in time for the aarti and walk back afterwards, without hunting for parking or an auto in the evening rush.
This guide goes area by area, with how long each takes to walk to the ghat, so you can choose a room that fits your trip. To book, see all hotels in Haridwar.
Why stay close to Har Ki Pauri
The lanes around the ghat are narrow and closed to cars, so even a short drive ends with a walk. The evening aarti draws thousands of people every day, and on weekends, festivals and holidays the roads into the old city slow to a crawl from late afternoon. A room within walking distance turns the aarti into a relaxed evening rather than a two-hour outing, and makes a pre-dawn dip easy for anyone in the family who wants one.

Areas near Har Ki Pauri, by walking time
Bara Bazaar and Upper Road: 2 to 10 minutes
The old market lanes directly behind the ghat are the closest you can sleep. Hotels here are mostly small, older buildings, some with Ganga-view rooms; many have stairs and no lift. Vehicles cannot reach most of them, so expect to walk the last few hundred metres with luggage, or use a hand-cart porter. Best for pilgrims who want to be at the ghat at dawn and do not mind a busy street.
Bhimgoda: 10 to 15 minutes
North of the ghat, towards the Rishikesh road, Bhimgoda is a little calmer and has road access, which makes arriving by car easier. A good middle ground for families.
Railway Road and the station: 15 to 25 minutes
The road from Haridwar Junction to the old city is lined with hotels of every size. You can walk to the ghat or take an e-rickshaw in about ten minutes on a normal day, and the railway and bus stations are close for an early train. Rooms here suit travellers passing through on the way to Rishikesh or the Char Dham Yatra.
Bhupatwala and Haripur Kalan: a short drive
Further up the Rishikesh road, these areas have ashrams, larger and newer hotels, and their own quiet ghats on the Ganga. Har Ki Pauri is a short auto ride away. Choose them if you want more space, parking and quiet evenings, and are happy to ride in for the aarti.
Kankhal: a short drive south
The old town of Kankhal, with the Daksh Mahadev temple, has traditional ashrams and calmer ghats. It suits pilgrims doing puja or rites for their family, and anyone who prefers an older, slower Haridwar.
Hotels, ashrams or a homestay
- Hotels range from simple rooms in the old city to larger properties with lifts, parking and restaurants on Railway Road and the Rishikesh road. With elderly parents, ask about a lift and how far the room is from where the car can stop.
- Ashrams and dharamshalas are found from Kankhal to Bhupatwala. Many expect guests to keep their timings and rules, and some take bookings only in person or by phone.
- Homestays in the older neighbourhoods put you with a local family, home-cooked food and hosts who know the lanes.
Haridwar is a vegetarian, alcohol-free town around its ghats, and almost every hotel near Har Ki Pauri serves vegetarian food only.
Parking and getting there
Cars cannot drive up to Har Ki Pauri. Visitors usually park at the large lots across the river, such as Pant Dweep, and walk over the bridge, or leave the car at their hotel and take an e-rickshaw. Haridwar Junction is about 2 to 3 km away, and the nearest airport, Jolly Grant near Dehradun, is about an hour's drive. If you book a room in the old city, ask the hotel where to park and how far it is.
The ghats and the aarti
Har Ki Pauri is a run of ghats rather than one. Brahma Kund is the holiest point and the centre of the evening aarti; around it, Gau Ghat, Subhash Ghat and Vishnu Ghat take the overflow on crowded days, and a dip there is just as meaningful. The aarti is held every evening at sunset, so the time moves through the year. Arrive at least an hour early on weekends and festivals to find a place on the steps. Our Har Ki Pauri Ganga aarti guide covers where to sit and what to expect.
Staying near Har Ki Pauri for the Kumbh 2027
Haridwar hosts the Ardh Kumbh from 14 January to 20 April 2027. On the main snan days, Makar Sankranti (14 January), Mauni Amavasya (6 February) and the Amrit Snan days (6 March, 8 March and 14 April), vehicles are stopped far from the ghat and routes turn one-way. A room within walking distance is then worth more than any other comfort: you walk down before sunrise, bathe and walk back, while others spend half a day getting in and out. Rooms near the ghat for these dates go months ahead. See our Kumbh hotel stays near Har Ki Pauri, or the camps and stays on the Kumbh Mela Haridwar page.
Tips for families and elderly pilgrims
- Choose a stay on the same side of the river as the ghat, so no bridge crossing is needed on foot.
- Ask for a ground-floor room or a lift; many old-city buildings have steep stairs.
- Go to the ghat early in the morning or on a weekday for a calmer dip.
- Fix a meeting point near the clock tower in case you get separated; phone networks can jam on big days.
- Carry a dry change of clothes in a bag, and hold on to the chains at the ghat; the current is strong.
When to visit
October to March is the most comfortable time, with mild days and cool nights. April to June is hot. The monsoon brings heavy rain and, in July, the Kanwar Yatra, when the old city is extremely crowded and some roads close. Festival days such as Makar Sankranti, Maha Shivratri, Baisakhi, Ganga Dussehra and Kartik Purnima bring large crowds, so book early for those dates.
