Puja and Karmkand during Kumbh Mela Haridwar: A Pilgrim's Guide
Ganga snan, Ganga puja, pind daan, mundan and other karmkand at the Haridwar Kumbh 2027 — what they are, when to do them and how to arrange a pandit.

For most pilgrims the Kumbh is not only a holy dip — it is the chance to perform puja and karmkand at one of Hinduism's most sacred places at its most auspicious time. Here is a simple guide to the rituals commonly performed at the Kumbh Mela Haridwar 2027.
Ganga snan and Ganga puja
The Kumbh snan is itself the central ritual — a dip in the Ganga at Har Ki Pauri or another ghat on an auspicious day is believed to wash away sins. Many families follow it with a short Ganga puja: flowers, a diya and prayers offered to Maa Ganga, usually led by a ghat pandit.

Pind daan and shraddh
Haridwar is one of the principal places for pind daan — rituals for departed ancestors. Families often combine it with the Kumbh. Haridwar's hereditary pandas (priests) keep genealogy registers going back generations; many families still find their ancestors' names recorded there.
Mundan and other sanskars
The first head-shaving of a child (mundan) is commonly performed on the ghats of Haridwar, as are other life-cycle rituals.
Rudrabhishek, havan and path
Around Maha Shivratri (6 March 2027, an Amrit Snan day) many pilgrims arrange a rudrabhishek. Havans, Satyanarayan katha and Gita or Ramayan path are also done in ashrams and camps through the Kumbh.
How to arrange a pandit
- Fix the ritual, date and approximate dakshina before the day — snan days are extremely busy.
- Ask what samagri (materials) is included.
- For pind daan, carry the names of the departed and your gotra.
Pulp Hotels can help
When you book a camp, hotel, ashram or homestay for the Kumbh through Pulp Hotels, our Kumbh desk can help arrange puja and karmkand with a Haridwar pandit on request — just mention it in your enquiry.
Ganga aarti at Har Ki Pauri
The Ganga aarti at Brahma Kund is held every evening around sunset, and there is a smaller morning aarti too. Come at least an hour early during the Kumbh to find a place on the steps; the bridge opposite the ghat gives a good view if the steps are full. Many families offer a leaf-boat of flowers and a diya (deep daan) on the river after the aarti.
What to carry for a puja
- A change of clothes and a towel for the dip.
- Names of the family members the puja is for, and your gotra.
- For pind daan, the names of the departed; the pandit brings most samagri, but confirm beforehand.
- Small change for dakshina and offerings.
Etiquette on the ghats
Remove footwear before the ghat steps, dress modestly, and do not use soap or shampoo in the river. Photographs of people bathing or of rituals should only be taken with permission. Hold on to the chains at the ghat edge — the current at Har Ki Pauri is strong, even when the water looks calm.
