Sitapur Travel Guide — Everything You Need to Know
Sitapur is a small roadside stop in Rudraprayag district, on the Kedarnath road a short way below Sonprayag. Private vehicles stop at Sonprayag; from there a shared jeep covers the last few kilometres to Gaurikund, where the walk of roughly 16 km to Kedarnath begins. Sleeping in Sitapur puts you close enough to be in that jeep queue at first light, which is why its rooms fill with Kedarnath pilgrims in the season.
Pulp Hotels does not list a hotel in Sitapur itself yet. The nearest verified stays are shown above: Behl Ashram in Gaurikund, at the start of the trek, and two hotels in the Guptkashi area further down the valley.
Sitapur, Sonprayag, Gaurikund or Guptkashi?
Sitapur and Sonprayag are the closest road-head stops, for the earliest start on the trek. Gaurikund is where the walk begins, with pilgrim rooms and ashrams but no car access. Guptkashi, about 30 km down the road, is the largest base, with the most rooms and the helipads around it, and suits families and anyone flying to Kedarnath.
Triyuginarayan, where Shiva and Parvati are held to have married, is up a side road from Sonprayag, so it fits into the day before or after the trek.
Getting to Sitapur
The road to Sitapur is the Kedarnath road: from Rishikesh or Haridwar up the Alaknanda valley to Rudraprayag, then up the Mandakini valley through Guptkashi, about 30 km short of Sonprayag. It is a long day from the plains, so most pilgrims break the journey in Rudraprayag or Guptkashi and reach Sitapur the evening before the trek. Shared taxis and buses run up the valley in the season; a car with a driver gives you the most control over timing.
When to go
Sitapur works on Kedarnath's calendar. The busiest weeks are the first ones after the temple opens in late April or May, then May and June, and again September and October, when rooms on this stretch fill early. July and August bring the monsoon, with slow roads and landslide closures, so leave a spare day. The temple closes each year on Bhai Dooj, two days after Diwali, and many stays on this stretch close soon after.
What to check before booking
- Parking. Ask where the car stays overnight and how early you can leave; the queue for the Gaurikund jeeps starts before dawn.
- Hot water and heating. Nights are cold even in summer at this height, so ask about geysers and blankets or heaters.
- An early breakfast. If you want to be walking by first light, ask the night before for an early or packed breakfast.
- Your yatra registration. It is checked on the Kedarnath route, so register before you travel and carry the same ID.
