Jim Corbett Safari Zones: Which Zone to Book and Where to Stay
Bijrani, Dhikala, Jhirna, Dhela, Durga Devi and Garjia compared: which Corbett zone is open when, which suits a first safari, a monsoon trip or a birder, how permits work, and which side of Ramnagar to stay on.

Jim Corbett National Park is not one park you drive into but a set of separate safari zones, each with its own gate, its own season and its own number of vehicles allowed in per shift. You book a zone, not the park — so the zone you pick decides what you see, how early you get up and where it makes sense to sleep. Nearly every zone is reached from Ramnagar, the town on the park's south-eastern edge.
Corbett in brief
Corbett is India's oldest national park, set up in 1936 as Hailey National Park and later renamed after Jim Corbett, the hunter who became a conservationist and wrote Man-Eaters of Kumaon. Project Tiger was launched here in 1973. The Ramganga river runs through the middle of the reserve, and the landscape changes from sal forest and dry riverbeds in the south to open grassland, called chaur, along the river further in. Tigers live in every zone, but the forest is dense and no zone can promise one; elephants, spotted deer, sambar, wild boar and a long list of birds are what most safaris actually show you.
The zones, one by one
Bijrani — the easy first safari
The Bijrani gate is at Amdanda, on the edge of Ramnagar town, so it is the quickest zone to reach from a hotel there. It mixes sal forest with patches of grassland and has a good reputation for sightings. It usually opens in mid-October and closes at the end of June. Because it is popular and close, its morning permits are often the first to go.
Dhikala — the deepest, and the one to sleep in
Dhikala is reached through the Dhangarhi gate on the road from Ramnagar towards Ranikhet, then a long drive inside the forest to the Dhikala camp above the Ramganga. Its grasslands are where Corbett's elephant herds gather, and the river below holds gharials and mugger crocodiles. The forest rest house rooms at Dhikala are the most sought-after beds in the park, booked on the same official portal as the permits. Day visitors usually go in by the shared canter, a large open vehicle that leaves from Ramnagar. Dhikala usually opens in mid-November and closes in mid-June.
Jhirna and Dhela — open all year
These two neighbouring zones on the southern edge share the gate at Dhela village, a short drive from Ramnagar. Jhirna has drier forest and open patches; Dhela, opened to visitors more recently, is smaller and quieter. Their value is the calendar: they normally stay open through the monsoon, when the core zones are shut, although heavy rain can still cancel a shift. If your dates are fixed between July and mid-October, these are the zones you will be choosing between.
Durga Devi — for birders
Durga Devi is on the hilly north-eastern side of the reserve, the furthest gate from Ramnagar. The rivers here and the steep forested slopes make it a favourite with birdwatchers more than with tiger hunters. It keeps roughly the same season as Dhikala, from mid-November to mid-June.
Garjia and the buffer areas
Garjia is one of the newer zones, named after the area around the Garjia Devi temple on the Kosi river north of Ramnagar. Outside the tiger reserve itself, the Sitabani forest is a buffer area known for birds and for the Sitabani temple, and it too stays open when the core zones close. These are good second or third safaris once you have done Bijrani or Dhikala.
Which zone suits your trip
- One night, first safari: Bijrani, with a hotel in Ramnagar so you are at the gate in minutes.
- The best chance of a long, quiet sighting: two nights at the Dhikala forest rest house, if you can get the booking.
- Travelling in the monsoon: Jhirna or Dhela, with Sitabani as a back-up.
- Birdwatching: Durga Devi in winter, when migrant birds are in.
- Young children or elderly parents: a zone close to your hotel, and the afternoon shift rather than the pre-dawn one.
Two shifts in two different zones show you more of the park than two shifts in the same one.
How permits work
Safari permits are issued only by the Corbett Tiger Reserve through its official online portal, and each zone allows a fixed number of vehicles per shift. There are two shifts a day, early morning and afternoon, each lasting a few hours; the exact timings move with the season. A gypsy (open jeep) takes up to six guests along with the driver and a forest guide, and every guest's name and ID are written on the permit. Carry the same ID you booked with — it is checked at the gate.
You can book the permit yourself and hire a registered gypsy in Ramnagar, or ask your hotel or a local operator to arrange both. Either way, ask to see the permit with your names on it before you pay in full, and be wary of anyone selling "guaranteed" Dhikala rooms or sightings. Our note on paying for a stay safely applies to safari packages too.
When to go
Mid-October to November is the reopening: green forest, pleasant days, and fewer crowds outside the Diwali week. December to February brings fog and real cold at dawn in an open jeep — carry a warm jacket, cap and gloves even if the afternoon is mild — and good birdwatching. March to June gets hot, but the forest thins out and animals come to the water, which is why many regulars prefer these months for tigers. July to mid-October is the monsoon, when only the year-round zones run.
Where to stay
Pick the side of Ramnagar that matches your zone:
- Ramnagar town — closest to the Bijrani gate and the railway station, with the most choice and the easiest early starts.
- The Ranikhet road along the Kosi — the resort belt north of town, on the way to the Dhangarhi gate for Dhikala and to Garjia.
- Towards Dhela — quieter, and convenient for Jhirna and Dhela.
Before you book, ask the hotel how far it is from your gate, whether it can pack breakfast for a pre-dawn start, and whether hot water is ready when you come back cold from a winter safari. Compare verified hotels in Ramnagar by location and amenities.
Getting there
Ramnagar is roughly 250 km from Delhi, usually six to seven hours by road, and has its own railway station with trains from Delhi. The nearest airport is Pantnagar. Nainital is about two hours up the hill, so the two are often combined. Coming from the Garhwal side, Corbett makes a good few days of forest after the ghats of Haridwar or Rishikesh.
On the safari
Stay inside the vehicle, keep your voice down, and wear muted colours rather than bright ones. Never ask the driver to leave the track or to go closer to an elephant; a guide who keeps his distance is doing his job. Take water, a dust scarf in the dry months and a pair of binoculars — they turn a distant shape into a sighting.

Frequently asked questions
Which zone in Jim Corbett is best for tiger sighting?
Dhikala and Bijrani have the strongest reputations, and the hotter months from March to June usually give the best odds as animals come to water. No zone can guarantee a tiger, so treat any promise of one with suspicion.
Which Corbett zones are open in the monsoon?
Jhirna and Dhela normally stay open all year, and the Sitabani buffer forest does too. Bijrani, Dhikala, Durga Devi and Garjia close for the monsoon and reopen from mid-October or mid-November. Heavy rain can cancel any shift.
How do I book a Jim Corbett safari?
Permits are issued on the Corbett Tiger Reserve's official online portal, per zone and per shift, with every guest's name and ID. You can book it yourself and hire a registered gypsy in Ramnagar, or let your hotel or a local operator arrange both.
How many people can go in one safari jeep?
A gypsy takes up to six guests, plus the driver and a forest guide who goes with every vehicle.
Where should I stay for a Jim Corbett safari?
Ramnagar town is best for the Bijrani gate and the railway station, the Ranikhet road along the Kosi for Dhikala and Garjia, and the Dhela side for Jhirna and Dhela. With a Dhikala booking you sleep inside the park at the forest rest house.

Pulp Hotels Team
The Pulp Hotels Team is the desk that runs Pulp Hotels and the verified properties on this route — Barkot, Uttarkashi, Harsil, Guptkashi, Joshimath, Badrinath and the Kedarnath valley. We deal with the owners of those hotels, and with the pilgrims staying in them, through every day of the season, and these guides are written and corrected from that work and from the official notices each season brings. Fares and opening dates change every year, so we leave them out on purpose and point you at the source instead.
