Kartik Purnima 2026 in Haridwar: The Ganga Snan on 24 November
Kartik Purnima 2026 falls on Tuesday 24 November. When to bathe at Har Ki Pauri, how the crowds and traffic work in Haridwar that day, and where to stay.

Kartik Purnima 2026 falls on Tuesday, 24 November. It is the full moon that closes the month of Kartik, and one of the biggest bathing days of the year in Haridwar: from before dawn, hundreds of thousands of people come to bathe in the Ganga at Har Ki Pauri and the ghats around it, then offer lamps and give alms. If you are planning to be there, the day goes much more easily with a room close to the river and a plan for the morning.
Why the Kartik Purnima snan matters
Kartik is held to be the holiest month of the year, and its full moon the holiest night in it. A bath in the Ganga on this day is counted among the most meritorious of the year, and many families who have bathed through the month come to Haridwar to finish it. The day is also Dev Deepawali, the "Diwali of the gods", when lamps are floated on the river at dusk, and it usually coincides with Guru Nanak Jayanti, so Sikh pilgrims travel too. Check the full-moon timing in your family's panchang, since the tithi can begin on the evening before.
Where to bathe
| Ghat | What it is like on the day |
|---|---|
| Har Ki Pauri (Brahma Kund) | The main ghat and the most crowded; police manage entry and exit in lanes |
| Vishnu Ghat and Gau Ghat | A short walk south; crowded but easier to move about |
| Kushavarta Ghat | Smaller, linked to shraddha rites |
| Kankhal and the ghats further south | Calmer, favoured by local families |
| Ghats towards Rishikesh | Quieter again; a good choice with elders |
Bathe early. The best hours are before sunrise, when the crowd is still moving freely; by mid-morning the area around Har Ki Pauri is packed. Hold the chains, never go beyond them, and keep children and elders beside you: the current is strong.

Getting around on the day
On big bathing days Haridwar's police stop outside vehicles well before the centre and send traffic to parking areas on the edge of town, with one-way routes on the main roads. Expect to walk for some distance, sometimes a long one, and leave the car where you are staying if you can. Trains into Haridwar Junction run full, and buses from Delhi and western Uttar Pradesh are crowded the evening before. Arriving on 23 November and staying until the afternoon of the 24th is far easier than a day trip.
What to carry
- A change of clothes and a small towel in a bag you can keep on your shoulder.
- A little cash for offerings, lamps and food; leave valuables in the room.
- A shawl or jacket: late-November mornings by the river are cold, around 10°C at dawn.
- A meeting point agreed in advance, with a photo of each child and elder on your phone.
The evening: lamps and the aarti
At dusk the Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri draws an even bigger crowd than usual, and leaf boats with diyas are set on the water all along the ghats. For a calmer view, watch from the far bank or the bridges; to be at the aarti itself, take your place well before sunset. Our Ganga Aarti guide has the details.

Pulp Hotels Team
The Pulp Hotels Team is the desk that runs Pulp Hotels and the verified properties on this route — Barkot, Uttarkashi, Harsil, Guptkashi, Joshimath, Badrinath and the Kedarnath valley. We deal with the owners of those hotels, and with the pilgrims staying in them, through every day of the season, and these guides are written and corrected from that work and from the official notices each season brings. Fares and opening dates change every year, so we leave them out on purpose and point you at the source instead.
