Mukteshwar Travel Guide — Everything You Need to Know

Mukteshwar is a quiet hilltop in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, at about 2,200 m, with forest and fruit orchards on its slopes and a wide view of the Himalayan peaks to the north. It grew up around an old Shiva temple on the summit and, later, a veterinary research station founded here in the 1890s. It is a place for walks, orchards and long views rather than crowds. Things to do in Mukteshwar

  • Mukteshwar Mahadev temple — the Shiva temple on top of the hill, reached by a flight of steps, with views on every side.
  • Chauli ki Jali — the rock cliffs just below the temple, with a sheer drop to the valley, used for rock climbing and rappelling.
  • The veterinary research campus — the old research station and its museum, among the earliest in India.
  • Orchards and walks — apple, peach, plum and apricot orchards on the slopes, and forest trails between the villages.
  • Ramgarh — the orchard belt on the road towards Nainital, known for its fruit and its old literary connections.

Best time to visit Mukteshwar

March to June is pleasant and the main season, with the orchards in blossom and then in fruit. October and November bring the clearest mountain views. December to February is cold, and Mukteshwar gets snow in some winters. July to September is the monsoon, green and misty, with landslide risk on the roads.

Getting to Mukteshwar

The nearest railway station is Kathgodam, about two and a half hours below by road, with direct trains from Delhi. The nearest airport is Pantnagar. Mukteshwar is around an hour and a half to two hours from Nainital and about an hour and a half from Bhimtal.

Where to stay around Mukteshwar

Stays are spread along the ridge and in the villages around it — Mukteshwar itself, Dhanachuli and Ramgarh — most with gardens or orchards and views of the peaks. Ask which way the room faces and how far the walk is from the road. Mukteshwar pairs well with Nainital and Bhimtal for a quieter few days in Kumaon.
